Chronic Dehydration – a silent health problem.
Dehydration doesn’t just mean that you’re thirsty. In fact, by the time your mouth is dry, you’re already in the stages of acute dehydration!!
Before you even feel thirsty, the body will give you signals that it is reallocating the available water in your body. You will present with chronic fatigue, constipation, digestive problems, all the way to high or low blood pressure.
Dehydration contributes to obesity, stomach ulcers, high cholesterol, even premature aging.
The human body consists of 70% water, the brain, 80%, and blood consists of 90% water. We need water for our body to do its basic functions properly. Not caffeinated or alcoholic beverages. These types of drinks only worsen the dehydration. No, we need water!
The old ‘eight 8 oz. glasses per day’ rule has gone by the wayside. The best way to determine how much water your body needs daily is to divide your weight in pounds by two and that number is the number of ounces you need at a minimum each day. For example, if you weigh 180 pounds and work in a sedentary job, you will need about 90 ounces throughout the day. Of course, if you have a strenuous job, or have a hot workplace, you will need to add to that figure. You will know that you are drinking enough water if it seems that your new walking routine is to the bathroom several times a day, and your urine is clear.
It was found that a 1% loss of water equals a 10% loss of energy. In a temperature of 82 degrees Fahrenheit, water loss is 3 liters an hour, which is more that 4% of your total body weight. That means a 40% loss of energy!!
Even when you think you’re hungry, your body may, in fact, be craving water. We usually go for the food, which is fine if the food has high water content. However, food in the system means stored fat, and the more you eat, the more water your body had to use to digest it! If you feel hunger pangs, try gulping a big glass of water first.
The best way to get our daily intake of water is throughout the day, not in a large, all-at-once quantity. That can lead to dramatic loss of essential minerals in the body and has even been known to cause death! So sip it throughout your day, your body will absorb it much better.
We all know that we can only survive 3 days without water. However, so many people are living with uncomfortable medical conditions that could be easily solved by simply drinking more water. Hydrate yourself. Your body will thank you, and you will thank yourself.
